While we at the New York Unity Project typically create political non-biased pamphlets for the most crucial elections in America, We believe there is no way to approach the issue of Proposition-50 from an unbiased perspective, because of how clear it is where voters should vote in this election. For those who are unaware, Proposition-50 is a proposed amendment to the California constitution. If passed, it will allow the state legislature to implement new partisan congressional maps which will be in use by 2026. These maps will be in use until the next 2030 census during which the maps can be redrawn. These new maps are being pushed hard by the Democratic governor of California, Gavin Newsom. With the implementation of these new maps, it is expected that the democrats will pick up 5 democratic seats in California in the House of Representatives, which could be crucial to flipping the house in the 2026 election.

However, throughout 2025, president Donald Trump has pushed Republican states to redraw their congressional maps as an attempt to prepare for the 2026 election. With polls indicating the potential for a democratic swing, Trump has viewed a redrawing of congressional maps as a path to retaining a republican House of Representatives. So, the Democratic redrawing of maps in California is actually a response to the actions of the Republican Party in Texas.
Historically, every 10 years, these congressional maps are redrawn following the census. There is a constitutional mandate that every district must have an equal population, and the maps are edited to balance out inequalities. However what is happening in this election is representative of the divided state America is in. Instead of conforming to the constitutional guidelines which have led our democracy for decades, both the democratic and republican party are bending every possible corner to get a leg up in the race for political supremacy. The congressional maps were created to give every vote the same power, intended to balance out the power an urban vote has versus a rural vote has. But, instead of balancing out the power of the voter, the voters are being manipulated themselves.

Despite this, we encourage the people of California to vote yes on Prop-50. As contradictory as that may sound, the reality is that the republicans have attempted to manipulate the political infrastructure in place with a power grab. The Democratic Party cannot afford to stand pat and watch this unconstitutional action go unnoticed. But that does not make the actions of either side ok, and this election in California is the perfect display of the polarization present in the United States. We are now at a point where the power of an individual’s vote is being manipulated for the benefit of the political elite, and the redrawing of maps is unacceptable no matter what your political orientation is. In the future, the partisan redrawing of congressional maps should be outlawed, and redrawing of these maps should be left completely to the commission process that is typically in place. The motivation of these drawings should be solely towards the goal of creating voter equality. It is crucial to vote yes on this issue to not only cancel out the impact that the redrawing of the Texas congressional maps has on the 2026 election, but to also send a message to the republican party that actions to disrupt the political equity of the United States will not go unnoticed. But don’t let this fool you into thinking that what Governor Newsom and California is doing is a good thing. This political battle is only providing fuel to the division present in the American public sphere, and neither side is acting in a respectable manner.
